Natural and artificial cytobioses are increasingly important both in practical terms and in evolutionary studies, and representative test systems set a basis for theoretical synthesis in this field of research. Different cellular partnerships were studied in the economically important case of nitrogen fixation. Associative, endocytobiotic, and organellar levels were approximated with Chlamydomonas-Azotobacter systems. These can grow without nitrogen and carbon nutrients and are very stable. Based on the results it might be possible to make artificially nitrogen-fixing organelles, at first on the unicellular level of test systems.
