Am Beispiel der humanistischen Lukian-Übersetzungstätigkeit untersucht dieser Artikel den Stand der Übersetzungsreflexion in der eingehenden Frühen Neuzeit. Im frühneuzeitlichen Lukian-Übersetzungskorpus lassen vor allem die Übersetzungsvorreden von Niklas von Wyle und Matthias Ringmann Ansätze einer beginnenden Auseinandersetzung mit Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Übersetzens erkennen. Die punktuellen Äußerungen der weiteren Lukian-Übersetzer sind zwar eher dem Prinzip der Nützlichkeit und Unterhaltung verpflichtet (und nehmen somit die Topoi der aufklärerischen Übersetzungsprogramme mutatis mutandis vorweg), legen ihr Augenmerk jedoch ebenfalls verstärkt auf das Verhältnis zwischen Prätexten und Volkssprache. Dabei wird die Bedeutung ersichtlich, welche Lukians Werke für die Entwicklung einer spezifisch deutsch- sprachigen Übersetzungskultur der Frühen Neuzeit gespielt haben. The article examines the state of reflections on translation processes in the Early Modern period on the basis of humanist translations of Lucian of Samosata. Within the Lucian translation corpus, especially the prefaces of Niklas von Wyle and Matthias Ringmann begin to explore both the possibilities and the limits of translation. The sporadic statements of the remaining Lucian translators are more committed to the principle of usefulness and entertainment (and thus anticipate the topoi used in the translation debate of the German Aufklärung), but they also pay close attention to the relationship between pretexts and the vernacular. This demonstrates the importance of Lucian’s works for the development of a specifically German-speaking translation culture of the Early Modern period.
