Der Artikel geht von der Prämisse aus, dass Übersetzungsreflexionen zwischen 1380 und 1730 von der Forschung mittlerweile erschöpfend ausgewertet sind, so dass hier keine neuen Erträge für eine Klärung der Übersetzungsbegriffs in der Frühen Neuzeit zu erwarten sind. Als einen neuen und ergebnisreichen Ansatz diskutiert der Artikel daher das Verfahren der Etymologie in allen seinen Facetten, von der morphologisch-substantiellen bis zur historisch-genetischen Wortbetrachtung. Das Wort übersetzen wird im Blick auf aussagekräftige semantische Felder im weiten Bereich zwischen Theologie, Ökonomie, Landwirtschaft und Handwerk stets auf der Basis von Belegen kritisch diskutiert, um die genauen Inhalte, Nuancen und Konnotationen des Lexems zu bestimmen. Zusätzlich erweitern morphologische, metaphorische, grammatische, onomasiologische und tropische Ansätze das Spektrum. The article is based on the premise that reflections on translation between 1380 and 1730 have been exhaustively evaluated by researchers, so that no new results can be expected regarding a clarification of the concept of translation in the Early Modern period. As a new and fruitful approach, the article discusses the process of etymology in all its facets, ranging from a morphological-substantive to a historical-genetic view of words. The word übersetzen is critically discussed on the basis of evidence with regard to meaningful semantic fields in the wide area between theology, economics, agriculture and crafts in order to determine the exact content, nuances and connotations of the lexeme. In addition, morphological, metaphorical, grammatical, onomasiological, and tropical approaches expand the spectrum.
