Las diversas tramas de la novela corta „La mayor confusión“ (1624) de Juan Pérez de Montalbán giran en torno al pecado, a la culpa y al arrepentimiento. Son trampas de las que los personajes han de liberarse. Analizaremos los motivos y la retórica que conectan estos temas controvertidos en la época, como el libre albedrío y la conciencia, y su relación con el debate por parte de los casuistas de los casos de conciencia. Este enfoque nos permitirá profundizar en la intención del autor, que se revela en la hábil búsqueda de alcanzar astutamente lo deseado, en un sutil juego de palabras entre las nociones de pescar y pecar. They are traps from which the characters must free themselves. In this paper, the motives and rhetoric that connect these controversial themes of the time, such as free will and predestinati­on, will be analysed against the background of the so-called ‘cases of conscience’ studied by the casuists. This approach allows to delve into the text’s intention, which is revealed in the skilful pursuit of cleverly achieving what is desired, in a subtle play on words between the notions of fishing and sinning.
