With proceeding globalization the demands of working life have changed in the last decades. In recent years, those in charge of German higher education began to realize these changes. Within curricula there is now a stronger focus on international topics and studying abroad is fostered or even compulsory. Furthermore, special study programs were developed in order to prepare students to the challenges of an increasingly globalized professional world promoting a key qualification called international or intercultural competence. In November 2001, the University of Regensburg and the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences started a cooperative project: the Extra Curricular Study Program in International Competence for students of all disciplines of both universities in Regensburg. One of the core aspects of this study program is to provide learning settings that promote not only cognitive, but also affective and behavioral learning, and thereby encouraging students to analyze, reflect, and capitalize on their own intercultural experiences. Based on the experiences of the Extra Curricular Study Program in International Competence, this article describes how intercultural learning can be realized in higher education in Germany.
