In the wake of the "cultural turn" and the spread of "postmodern cultural relativism", culture(s) were defined as a central aspect of human life. Relativism implies forms of crosscultural, i.e. intercultural communication that gain in importance through globalization. An alternative perspective chooses everyday life as its point of departure. Instead of focusing primarily on interpretations, this viewpoint concentrates on interdependencies, which result from daily practice and power relations and structure actions through the production of reality. These theoretical perspectives have methodological implications. Intercultural communication assumes clearly separated cultures, but it remains unclear, to what extent this assumption is constructed by science. Research on everyday life takes relationships and structures as points of departure, i.e. integration through local knowledge, which is to be captured through emic reconstruction. The basic question is, thus, whether the investigation of simulacra itself constructs or deconstructs new simulacra.
