Humanities’ cultural turn as well as people developing an increased awareness of internationalization processes have stipulated increasing academic research on intercultural communication. Basing on a multitude of theories, this research has produced very divergent notions of when and how culture is supposed to influence social interaction. This article offers a systematic of notions of culture and their assumed influence of culture on social interaction. To this aim, the systematic primarily centers on the distinction between primordial vs. constructionist notions of culture. For a better understanding of the relevance of culture for people’s action, this article suggests to take culture itself as an object and a theme of social discursive construction. From participating in this discourse, individuals derive their own subjective notion of culture that they will implement as performative acts in their lives. The article will give examples for the use of the different notions of culture mentioned in mass media communication.
