Extremly long walks are begun for three reasons: to comprehend a place’s natural or social make up; to comprehend oneself; or to set a record. That is how Rebecca Solnit desribes it in »Wanderlust«, her excellent history of walking. My recent attempt to cross the United States on foot was initially undertaken to explore the first two categories alone, although it is quite possible that myself and my travelling companion, David Toolan, have unwittingly begun setting a record for the most burgers eaten during a crossing of any continent on foot.
