Die International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions – kurz IFLA –wurde 1927 gegründet; heute hat sie Mitglieder aus circa 150 Staaten und vertritt rund 500 000 BibliotheksmitarbeiterInnen weltweit. Ihre Arbeitsbereiche umfassen in knapper Zusammenfassung und unter Berücksichtigung der Themenstellung interkulturelle Bibliotheksarbeit folgende Gebiete: sechs »Core Activities«, unter anderem das Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE), 44 »Sections« – darunter »Public Libraries«; »Libraries for Children and Young Adults«; »Library Services to Multicultural Populations« (MCULTP) – und 12 »Special Interest Groups«.
