The sports betting market has developed rapidly since the Millennium as new technology has made the product more accessible and stimulated product innovation. Thus, the size of the Global industry has increased at least five-fold and the bulk of turnover now occurs in-play rather than pre-match. These developments bring opportunities and risks for sport. Benefits include that an increase in the popularity of betting raises interest in and demand for sport. More directly, sports can benefit from selling to the betting industry the data which drives in-play wagering. But against these gains must be set the risk that more liquid betting markets allow criminal interests to make greater profit from manipulating sports events. And indeed, there appears to have been a step increase in the prevalence of match fixing across a range of sports. This paper considers both the benefits and costs from sports betting and asks whether there is a trade-off for sports organisers between increasing betting-related revenue and mitigating integrity risk.
