Soil salinity causes great loss to agricultural production. Plants growing under abiotic stresses have evolved different mechanisms for maintaining ion homeostasis within the cell. The role of Ca2+ as a second messenger in many biological systems is well known. However recent studies implicate calcium in salt stress perception in local and systemic leaves. Role of Ca2+ as a second messenger in response to salt stimuli, role of plants as salt excluders and components involved in systemic salt signaling are discussed in this short review.
