This brief review describes the perception of bacterial and fungal pathogens by plants and early signaling events leading to the establishment of an innate immune response. Plant pattern-recognition receptors detect conserved pathogen-associated molecular pat-terns and initiate signaling events which include calcium fluxes, an oxidative burst, callose deposition and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases.
