Within the context of the Lisbon Agenda of the European Heads of State and Government, a strategy paper was put forward in 2000 on European research. Since then numerous initiatives have been developed which are outlined briefly in the following article. The 48 projects of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) include DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) and CLARIN (Common Language Resource and Technology Infrastructure). OpenAIRE is relevant for implementing open access information infrastructures in Europe. The most recent support programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, was launched in January 2014. However, information infrastructures are underrepresented in it. The article therefore argues in favour of taking a common strategic approach in order to convince the member states and their representatives of the potential which lies in information infrastructures for the development of research and education in Europe and worldwide.
