Endophytic fungi are diverse group of microorganisms which thrives in the tissues of healthy plants without causing any harm to its host. To study the diversity among the fungal communities present in Rann of Kutch, Gujarat (West) and Pithoragarh, Uttrakhand (North), India, both regions with extreme weather conditions, we isolated the fungal root endophytes of Pennisetum glaucum (growing in Kutch) and of vegetables (grown in Pithoragarh region). 110 endophytes were isolated and identified on morphological basis. The highest colonization frequency (72%) was observed in Ascomycetes, mainly Fusarium and Aspergillus. The extracellular enzymatic activity, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production and phosphate solubilization in 25 distinct fungal root endophytes were determined.
