The evolutionary conserved Alb3/Oxa1/YidC membrane protein family constitutes a novel class of proteins that function as insertase and/or assembly and stabilization factors during membrane biogenesis. Family members were identified in mitochondria and chloroplasts of eukaryotes as well as in the plasma membrane of bacteria. All organisms including gram-positive bacteria code for two distinct isoforms, Oxa1 and Oxa2 which are the result of independent gene duplication, except gram-negative bacteria like E.coli which contain only the YidC protein. This review focuses on the eight family members identified in Arabidopsis thaliana, their organelle localization, substrate specification and function during thylakoid and inner envelope biogenesis.
