Arno Schmidt's novel »The Egghead Republic«, which was first published in German in 1957, is set in the year 2008. Along witha negatively utopian world largely destroyed by an atomic catastrophe, the author envisions a positive utopia of an artificialisland built prior to the atomic wars. On it are stored all the cultural assets of the Earth, which hence provide the geniuses of theworld with ideal working conditions. One of these is, of course,a library. It holds all previously printed books and can make anyof them available in an incredibly short time. Both are - as canbe shown - unrealistic. A further utopian element is the exceedingly low level of usage. Initially a satirical criticism of Schmidt'sartist colleagues in Darmstadt, it now, when projected into theyear 2008, reduces the library, and even the entire island utopia,to absurdity.
