Contributions of Solid State Physics to the Development of a Theoretically Founded Materials Science
Deep insight into the behaviour of materials requires a theory of the solid state which extends from electronic structure to macroscopic properties. For the examples of electronic and mechanical properties it is shown that for this purpose a microscopic description of the solid body starting from first principles as well as a mesoscopic theory have to be developed. Both approaches are analyzed, possible results are explained with examples. The discussion of unsolved problems shows a growing integration of both approaches as well as an inclusion of theoretical developments of other branches of physics.
