Das elektromagnetische Feld wird an das elastische Feld eines akustisch aktiven Kristalls in bekannter Weise über die Abhängigkeit der Dielektrizitätskonstanten vom Deformationstensor angekoppelt. Aus dem so entstehenden nichtlinearen Gleichungssystem wird näherungsweise die Polarisation des B<small>RILLOUIN</small>-Streulichtes in Abhängigkeit von der Polarisation des Laserlichtes berechnet. In akustisch aktiven Kristallen ist das Streulicht bei linear polarisiertem Laserlicht immer zirkular polarisiert im Gegensatz zu akustisch in aktiven Kristallen, wo das Streulicht ebenfalls linear polarisiert ist.
