Total yields and angular distributions of 380 keV gamma rays from the Cr<sup>53</sup> (<I>p</I>, <I>n γ</I>) Mn<sup>53</sup> reaction have been measured for proton energies below 2.5 MeV. The experimental results are in good agreement with predictions of the statistical compound-nucleus theory. The angular distributions of 560 keV gamma rays upon the proton inelastic scattering on Cr<sup>53</sup> at <I>E</I><sub>p</sub> = 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 MeV are isotropic, which is commensurate with a ½<sup>-</sup> assignment to the first excited state of Cr<sup>53</sup>.
