Isolated endocyanelles from Cyanophora paradoxa contain unusual fatty acids as compared to free-living cyanobacteria. The fatty acids with the highest concentration in C. korschikoffiana are the Hexadecanoic and some polyunsaturated Eicosanoic acids. Eicosapentenoic acid is most common of all fatty acids, which indicates a genetic or metabolic substitution in the endocyanelles during the coevolution of endocytobiont and host.
