Complete series of thin sections taken from Chlamydomonas reinhardii zygotes at an early and the final stage of maturation were examined by means of electron-microscopy to reveal the topographical distribution of the mitochondria. The observations were quantified by morphometric analysis of the distribution of the mitochondrial volume. The percentage of mitochondrial volume distributed in the more central cell regions is 28% in the young zygote and increases to about 60% at the end of the maturation period. Additionally, only the older zygote stage shows mitochondria in close spatial association with the centrally located nucleus. These results indicate dislocation of a great part of the chondriome from the cell periphery towards the perinuclear region during zygote maturation. The functional implication of this change in mitochondrial topography is discussed.
