A 1092 bp fragment (corresponding to about 79% of the homologous E. coli sequence) of the atpD-gene, coding for the beta-subunit of the ATPase of Pirellula marina, was cloned and the nucleotide sequence determined. The predicted amino acid sequence was compared to the homologous proteins of various organisms. As far as conclusions are permitted from the rather small data base of published atpD-gene sequences, the phylogenetic position of Pirellula marina in the distance matrix tree is basically in accord to that seen in trees based upon analyses of ribosomal RNAs.
