Science is always committed to a truth which is universal. All the same, the world-wide community of knowledge has rested up to now on a firm and at times eccentric national pedestal. The organization of science grew and developed as an expression of the nation-state. This national basis is now slipping. »Globalization« for the sciences means that the national stage is no longer solely decisive, and perhaps even only of subsidiary importance, for orientation and format, ways and means, career and reputation. This calls for scientists, politicians and publishers to take a new perspective. It demands a re-orientation in two respects: what are the actual options available and which option is worth giving preference to. This article condenses the possible paths of development into three types: the market option, the cultural option, and the civilization option.
