In the present paper a system to introduce foreign genes into isolated mitochondria and to analyse RNA processing upon in organello incubation is further exploited. We analysed endogenou nad9 RNA editing in maize. While in a previous study endogenous atp6 transcripts were found to be fully edited, maize nad9 transcripts are partially edited in organello. Comparisons to previously published data indicate, that the in organello system faithfully reproduces in planta editing. Transcripts of an introduced atp9 gene from sorghum are partially edited in maize mitochondria at three out of eight editing sites. In contrast editing of trancripts of an introduced A. thaliana cox2 gene is complete at all editing sites analysed. Finally, unspliced cox2 transcripts exhibit partial RNA editing. While editing of mRNAs of endogenous genes appears to reflect the physiological situation in planta, the varying ability to edit, to partially edit, or not to edit transcripts of foreign origin may indicate the presence of transcript- or species-specific factors in plant mitochondria.
