Unidentified organisms replicating within the cyto-plasm of Acanthamoeba sp. had been observed for the first time in 1997 (Hoffman et al. 1997). Their taxo-nomic position could not be assessed by conventional and molecular genetic means. Recently, organisms of almost the same shape and size of about 1 µm were found in Acanthamoeba sp. isolated from aquatic habitats in Chile and Australia which were identified as giant viruses by genome analysis and called Pandoravirus sp. (Philippe et al. 2013). We took this as an opportunity to complete previous descriptions by electron microscopy (Michel et al. 2003) by analyzing additional features in order to be able to better compare the morphologic similarities and possible differences between the two organisms replicating in Acanthamoebae.
