For the first time since the end of the Second World War, the main site of the Berlin State Library is currently being renovated. In the spring of 2013 the new reading room was opened. With the completion of the new users’ center, which was designed by HG Mertz (Stuttgart/Berlin), the building once again has its core component of logistical and library services. Along with the translucent cube reading room for the building located on Unter den Linden, which was originally designed for the Historical Research Library, users can also make use of the new rare manuscripts reading room, a lending department, and a visitors’ lounge. Furthermore, a major portion of the Lipman-shelving area has already been renovated. The storage vault for the library’s valuable special holdings has been allotted 3.000 square meters of space. Meanwhile the original site, which was inaugurated in 1914, is being equipped with all the requisite technology for modern library service, including a modern book transport system. The second stage of construction is scheduled for completion in 2016.
