Control of microbial pathogens by non pathogenic microbes is now widely considered as more natural and environmentally acceptable alternative to existing physical and chemical based treatment methods. In the present investigation we studied the interaction between Trichoderma viridae and Fomitopsis feei, by using methods such as dual culture technique, microscopic observations of hyphal interaction, evaluating the influence of volatile and non-volatile metabolite effects on each other species. In dual culture, T. viridae overgrew the colony of F. feei rapidly in solid plate when inoculated both at the same time. Microscopic observation of mycelial growth on malt extract agar showed the lysis of mycelium and released the contents of mycelial debris. Diffusible metabolites of T. viridae significantly reduced the growth of F. feei in both agar plates and broth media. Even though to a lesser extent, volatile metabolites of T. viridae also reduced the growth of F. feei. Understanding the metabolic interactions between the two organisms will be useful for developing measures against wood decaying fungi and overcome many problems associated with them.
