E-papers belong to the well-established and increasingly popular internet publications which are offered today by most newspaper publishers in Germany for reading both online and off-line. How this service developed in Germany and the current state of affairs is presented here in an initial survey. Due to a library law passed in 2006, e-papers are to be collected, catalogued, permanently preserved, and made publicly accessible by the German National Library. To this end, the library established a pilot project in which a work-flow system for the automated collection of e-paper editions was developed; it will be expanded to up to 300 titles and successively integrated into the daily routine operations. This project is presented here in comparison with the previous collection procedures for daily newspapers. In conclusion, the possible consequences that the collection of e-papers at the German National Library may have upon the practice of collecting print editions are discussed.
