Die Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) enthält fortlaufende Sammelwerke aus allen Ländern und Zeiten, in allen Sprachen und Materialarten und ist das bundesweite Nachweisinstrument für Periodikabestände. Für Zeitungen ist die ZDB der elektronische deutsche Gesamtkatalog, trotz der bekannten Lücken im Nachweis. Das Datenformat der ZDB ist auf die besonderen Erfordernisse der formalen Zeitungserschließung ausgelegt und eröffnet dem Nutzer zeitungsspezifische Recherchemöglichkeiten. Geplante Bestandserhaltungsmaßnahmen und der Nachweis des Produkts als Mikroform oder Digitalisat stehen als Information zur Verfügung. Daten zur erfolgten Bestandserhaltung werden an EROMM geliefert. Die Verknüpfungstechnik erlaubt das Navigieren zwischen einzelnen zusammengehörenden Titeln. Für eine übersichtlichere Darstellung sollen die Zusammenhänge anhand von dynamisch generierten Zeitungsstammbäumen visualisiert werden. Neue Selektions- und Präsentationsformen mittels Kartensoftware für Verbreitungsorte und -gebiete sind geplant. The German Serials Database (ZDB) contains serial publications from all countries and years of publication, in all languages and formats and serves as a national record of periodical holdings. For newspapers the ZDB is the electronic union catalogue of German holdings, despite the commonly known gaps in documentation. Its data format is adapted to the particular requirements of formal newspaper cataloging and provides the user with options appropriate for researching newspapers. The information provided also includes plans for conservation measures, and the existence of microform or digital copies. Details of completed preservation projects are provided to EROMM. Links enable the user to navigate between individually related titles. In order to provide a clear overview, the relationships are to be visually represented with dynamically generated newspaper genealogies. There are also plans for new forms of selection and presentation with the help of mapping software that shows locations and areas of distribution.
