The origin of the mitochondria of several organisms can be traced back to the purple bacteria, especially the mitochondria of the green plants and the eumycota. A few data support the hypothesis that also the mitochondria of ciliata have their origin in the purple bacteria. Based on sequence comparisons of several tRNAs a hypothetical phylogenetic tree is reconstructed and compared with those of other authors.
