Micro 2-D PAGE separation of the water-soluble proteins of selective translation-inhibited, in vivo labeled, isolated endocyanelles of C. paradoxa shows over 250 polypeptides. The majority were transfered into the endocyanelles and only approximately 10% were encoded in the endocyanelle genome, including both subunits of Rubisco and the ex - and beta-subunits of the phycobiliproteins. This high protein-import indicated the strong genetic dependence on the host and placed the endocytobiont at an advanced stage in plastid evolution.
