First the concept of self-maintenance is introduced and explicated with respect to its biological relevance. Then two simple physico-mathematical models of extended spatio-temporal systems are described. Results of calculations are reported which show that these models have as solutions selfmaintaining single "protocells" as well as self-maintaining populations of such protocells.
